The Hollow Earth is a historical concept proposing that the planet Earth is entirely hollow or contains a substantial interior space. So why is Verlinde’s rediscovery of a three-centuries-old model a big deal? Because gravitation itself is a first principle, and thus should not be derivable from other laws. Whether we think of gravitation as mass attracting mass, or as mass warping spacetime, the fact of gravitation cannot be reduced to anything simpler. As such, it should not be possible to rediscover it from other, disparate areas of physics. This would be like deducing the US Constitution from the Swiss Federal Constitution.
