UBI is an end of the road solution to inevitable mass unemployment from automation, so taht people continue to have money to spend in the market so the markets can judge demand/need of the people and match supply accordingly, so as to keep the economy going, your new job with UBI is to keep the market going by spending the money

UBI does't incentivise work, it's not an antithesis to welfare
Welfare disencourages work because you lose it if you get a job and jobs often start under welfare rates
However UBI doesn't encourage more work, it just gives you money

What you want is a welfare reform that doesn't come to a halt when you get a job, such as, you continue to get welfare before a certain amount is made, and after that you get welfare up to a certain point until you exceed it, say
Sub 30K = welfare bump of 10K
40-50K = Welfare up to 50K
At 50K = Welfare stops, you're making 50K or more, and you don't need anything.

Those are very rough numbers, but that's just an example of how to reform welfare to inventivize finding a job without causing a "Welfare speed bump" that punishes people for making more money
