The whole thing is a cluster fuck. There is the US/Western forces/ Israel and sunni alliance v Russia/Iran/Syria then there is the turkish influence and ambitions in the region along with various third party militias and terror groups. the Israelis want the over throw in syria and will let US troops get shot to guarantee it. Nobody wants ww3 but with so many conflicting interests and groups put into the powder keg the likelihood of negative outcomes get higher the longer this goes on.
Also yeah there is the whole issue with hamas/hezbollah

my point is history is not just facts but also narratives with judgments. Vietnam could either be good or bad depending on what a person is trying to push. The same with WW2 and the holocaust.
