What I discovered recently is that infectious diseases like influenza are all very new, in evolutionary terms, and in nearly every case have mutated from existing diseases of herd animals (like birds, or ungulates). Until the advent of agriculture, humans lived in communities that were simply too small for infectious pathogens to survive. By modern standards there were absolutely tiny numbers of humans alive 100K years ago.
