Modern warfare in US doesn't happen for one reason, it's a sum of interests. If enough "clans" want a war, it happens, almost regardless of politics. The Lybia gold-backed currency is a pretty solid reason, but objectively Lybia never had the political capital to affect the petrodollar, it was a "potential danger".
