Females in some species of bird revert to a child-like state, and withhold copulation until a male can feed her a sufficient number of worms. That way, the female demands that the male evens out the parental investment, by providing her with the energy (worms) to produce a nutritious egg (and not just providing cheap sperms).

The deer may be extracting nutrition with which to produce a nutritious egg, before submitting to copulation. Females of some species of spider also extract parental investment by force, by eating the male after copulation, so that she may nourish her growing children.

It is theorized by some that, by forcing this parental investment, it makes the male more likely to carry on investment, since he has more to lose if the children die than he otherwise would without having done the initial donation. It is true that in some species of bird, where the female withholds copulation until a male builds her a suitable nest, co-parenting is observed, and both parents provide worms for their offspring.
