Hey guys was planning on calling in tonight, but I was contacted by my manager today to cover a closing shift so I wanted to share with you guys my experience on Monday. I’m transferring from Auburn University to a smaller school in Maryland Towson university just north of Baltimore. Monday was new student orientation and I was excited to get back to school after taking a year off to work. I arrived at the check in station where I was given a lanyard with my name and my major attached to it. But what caught my eye was that they were giving out pronoun buttons to attach to the lanyard. He she or ze. Strike 1.
About 20 mins later everyone was gathered into ballroom where the orientation leaders all lined up to introduce themselves. During this presentation each leader had a few seconds to introduce themselves (they gave there name, major, and an interesting fact about themselves). As each person began to speak a personalized PowerPoint slide was projected on to the wall. And on the slide right under each persons name was their “preferred pronoun”. Which really irked me, somehow implying that the 2 most important things I needed to know about that individual were their name and their gender... (only 1 of the 25 orientation leaders had they/them pronouns and it was this bull dyke looking girl with multiple facial piercings including a septum piercing which looked god awful.. but the most disturbing thing about her was that she is an education major) Strike 2.
I looked over at my dad in disgust but I had no time to talk to him before the students were asked to leave to attend another meeting.
This time we had 3 options. Academic achievement (that’s where I went), student activities, and finally equality and diversity on campus. As much as I wanted to jump into the belly of the beast, I used my better judgment and went to academic achievement. I was happy to see that of over 150 students only 5 decided to go the the diversity lecture.

After a few more useful presentations on campus resources and financial aid, all of the students were forced to go endure an hour long title XI cringe fest... this was strike 3 for me but I decided to just talk to the person next to me instead of listen to the lecture.We broke for lunch and I was doubting whether or not I would fit in on campus. After lunch we broke off into our respective colleges and spent 3 hours signing up for classes. As I finished I walked back to meet up with my dad. We discussed my classes and cracked some jokes with an orientation leader. Finally as we made our way toward the glass door leading outside I saw that same bull dyke running from the other side of the door with 2 other women to open it for me and my father. It was very nice of her... it?.. so I thanked her/their/ it and proceeded to walk away, but my dad said in an innocent tone “thank you, you ladies have a nice day!” And I stopped in my tracks.... I looked over at her/their/it and she/they/it had this angry look in her/their/it ‘s eyes.. she was offended... if we continue down this path of Social justice and equity a simple innocent exchange like that will become a hate crime...that is what worries me the most.
