hey everybody

2018-06-14 02:31:20 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

who caught Dave Rubin on Rogan today

2018-06-15 02:17:09 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

anyone else watch Owen Benjamin on youtube?

2018-06-15 02:18:16 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

He just posted a new video responding to some of the things Sam Harris said on Dave Rubin, and I felt like talking about it

2018-06-15 02:19:11 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Well I definitely endorse the work he does and all that but his last couple of videos really rubbed me the wrong way

2018-06-15 02:19:28 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Benjamin

2018-06-15 02:19:57 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Well it is kind of complicated but basically he talks about religion in this video and its "necessity" but I really don't like his arguments

2018-06-15 02:21:17 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

is he?? I figured he's Christian

2018-06-15 02:21:52 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

He just talks about it in general, responding to Sam Harris basically saying that religion isn't a necessary causal factor for morality

2018-06-15 02:23:54 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

well I'm interested in engaging in the conversation about it but I felt really weird about the way he structured his arguments

2018-06-15 02:25:10 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I have nothing against religion, but I also don't think it's fair to say that atheism is immoral because you need religion in order to have morality

2018-06-15 02:26:26 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Ok but even accepting that fact, I can easily come up for a logical way for an objective morality to come about without the involvement of religion

2018-06-15 02:28:08 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

farming? never heard that one

2018-06-15 02:28:45 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Ok, so how farming?

2018-06-15 02:30:21 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

well I guess I can see it.

2018-06-15 02:31:03 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Farming means relying on each other for food > We must rely on each other to survive > Logically must come up with a morality that fosters group survival

2018-06-15 02:31:57 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

But even nomadic tribes had large groups

2018-06-15 02:32:48 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

probably anywhere from 10 to like 150

2018-06-15 02:33:33 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but in north america it was probably waaay more than that

2018-06-15 02:34:01 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

well yeah of course

2018-06-15 02:34:26 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but there's an easy way to have a shared moral code without religion

2018-06-15 02:35:07 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

We don't want to die -> must rely on each other to not die -> must also trust each other to not die -> don't harm or betray other members of your species

2018-06-15 02:36:08 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

ooh and there's also the whole thing about intersubjectivity

2018-06-15 02:36:55 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

You talking about in general or monotheistic?

2018-06-15 02:37:11 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

like theology?

2018-06-15 02:37:50 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

well animism existed for a really long time

2018-06-15 02:38:22 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I don't know if we can prove it but I bet belief in spirits in nature exists as far back as communication does

2018-06-15 02:39:48 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

"The remains of one of the earliest anatomically modern humans to be cremated was buried near Lake Mungo." -40,000 BCE

2018-06-15 02:40:58 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

then I'd say it's any belief in the supernatural

2018-06-15 02:41:11 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

that's also shared amongst a group

2018-06-15 02:42:16 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I think the most basic reason to have religion (in an evolutionary sense) is in order to not kill yourself because we're all gonna die anyway

2018-06-15 02:42:59 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

not even to make it worthwhile, but to see cause and effect in nature

2018-06-15 02:43:38 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

the trees grow because the tree gods willed them to

2018-06-15 02:44:21 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

either way lol

2018-06-15 02:45:29 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I don't think you can say religion exists if people can't communicate that religion to each other, and that would apply to animals

2018-06-15 02:45:55 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

there's a difference between religion and superstition

2018-06-15 02:46:35 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

yes but they don't "think" about that cause and effect, their instincts just bring them in the direction of the worms because they evolved to doso

2018-06-15 02:47:06 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

evidence?

2018-06-15 02:49:37 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I think you could definitely say that there's an adaptive reason for that

2018-06-15 02:49:47 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but not a genetic one**

2018-06-15 02:50:41 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I don't know if you could even say that animals "thrive"

2018-06-15 02:51:27 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I mean I love my dog, but my dog only loves me in so far as I can provide it food and shelter. That's instinct

2018-06-15 02:52:30 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Religion would be if the salmon actually had an inner monologue where it said that the end of the river is the path to righteousness

2018-06-15 02:53:38 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

You only need evidence to prove positive claims, not to disprove them

2018-06-15 02:54:51 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

what makes you think the birds believe in the rain god?

2018-06-15 02:55:33 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

where does god come into that

2018-06-15 02:56:09 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

again, are birds even capable of believing

2018-06-15 02:57:36 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

or maybe they just learned to associate the rain with there being more worms

2018-06-15 02:58:59 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

wait don't hunting dogs teach their young how to hunt?

2018-06-15 03:00:41 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I dunno, maybe there are natural learned behaviors but where does religion come into play what so ever?

2018-06-15 03:01:48 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Well no, they are learning behaviors because they see what works, and the greatest good to them is what ever keeps them alive

2018-06-15 03:03:13 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I didn't say that

2018-06-15 03:03:22 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I don't follow that logic

2018-06-15 03:04:02 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

?

2018-06-15 03:04:29 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but you can't even say that there is belief

2018-06-15 03:05:02 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

with people sure, but with instinctive animals no way

2018-06-15 03:06:56 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

^

2018-06-15 03:07:30 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

there are hierarchies in religion, there's no religion in hierarchies

2018-06-15 03:07:40 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

no they don't

2018-06-15 03:08:05 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

hierarchies are just a way of ranking one thing as better than another, but you don't need belief for that

2018-06-15 03:09:16 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

you don't "believe" it, you just behave within the constructs of the hierarchy

2018-06-15 03:10:06 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

you have to be capable of complex thought to be capable of belief

2018-06-15 03:10:58 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but lobsters don't choose those values, they just naturally behave within that structure

2018-06-15 03:11:42 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

the lobster isn't thinking "i'm gonna mate with the biggest lobster," it's just naturally and instinctively choosing to mate with whatever has the greatest chance for successful procreation

2018-06-15 03:12:23 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but those thick coats aren't chosen because they believe anything, they just choose them because they instinctively are attracted to thicker coats

2018-06-15 03:12:43 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

hyenas are instinctively attracted to hyenas with tougher jaws, no belief required

2018-06-15 03:12:55 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

because of evolution

2018-06-15 03:13:15 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

they don't choose those things, it just happens that the ones that survived the game of life had those qualities

2018-06-15 03:13:40 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

or the attribute that keeps them alive

2018-06-15 03:15:03 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

so what?

2018-06-15 03:15:33 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

and?

2018-06-15 03:15:38 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

what does that have to do with religion?

2018-06-15 03:17:09 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

no?

2018-06-15 03:17:46 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

that's a symptom of religion, not a factor of it

2018-06-15 03:18:21 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

yeah, and people are capable of believing in things like that, animals are not

2018-06-15 03:19:07 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

evidence?

2018-06-15 03:19:35 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

the statement that birds believe in the supernatural is an extraordinary claim that has to be proven

2018-06-15 03:20:16 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but those opinions should be based in fact

2018-06-15 03:21:06 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I hate alcohol lol

2018-06-15 03:22:17 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

๐Ÿ‘Œ

2018-06-15 03:22:43 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

that's because we're all conservatives who don't yell at each other xD

2018-06-15 03:23:06 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I just assumed

2018-06-15 03:23:18 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

maybe not then lol

2018-06-15 03:23:51 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Oh, speaking of which who has seen Sh0e's new video

2018-06-15 03:23:57 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

it's amazing

2018-06-15 03:24:09 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

she talks about the feminists who believe being straight is a choice

2018-06-15 03:24:46 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

that wasn't nearly enough reason for me to stop

2018-06-15 03:25:03 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

basically candid paid them to do sponsorships

2018-06-15 03:25:12 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

but it turned out candid has been doing some really shady shit

2018-06-15 03:26:07 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

yeah but they just didn't do enough research and they apologized for it later so whatever

2018-06-15 03:26:11 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

yeah it died

2018-06-15 03:26:57 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I love them all lol

2018-06-15 03:27:08 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Not a big fan of TJ Kirk though

2018-06-15 03:27:30 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I have a friend who looks exactly like him

2018-06-15 03:27:50 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

lol he's a gun loving texan so very different

2018-06-15 03:28:52 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I didn't like how TJ was basically cynical about everything

2018-06-15 03:29:06 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

didn't see that

2018-06-15 03:29:34 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Dam

2018-06-15 03:31:09 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

I called in yesterday

2018-06-15 03:31:38 UTC [Call-In Show Server #general]

Yeah my call was somewhat early on
