Hello
I was expecting the chat roll to be a bit more intimidatingly fast what with the ginormous amount of people here but it's not so bad.
Anyone hear of this petition to tell the electoral college to chang their votes? ๐
Does there happen to be anyone here who knows enough of American civics to explain why the electoral college even exists? I heard some things that made it sound pretty reasonable.
Well what if you think of it this way. If there's no electoral college then all you need is the big cities to vote for you and no one else matters.
The electoral college makes it so that people in more rural areas still have a vote.
That's no good.
Don't worry, I get that a lot.
There have been presidents that won electoral votes before while losing the popular votes. Why would they start doing things differently now?
I thought the electoral college was stupid at first but the more I hear about it, the more it seems like a good idea.
I say 'seems' because I'm still in the process of educating myself.
Besides, that petition is bogus.
It would require the electoral college to go against the will *of their own state*.
It's worse than that @JoshingTons
There is no guarantee that the people who signed it are all US citizens.
Dude going against the will of your own state just to pander to the needs of people who live in *other* states is a recipe for revolution.
In fact, it seems the electoral vote system was conceived to *prevent* revolution.
Which camp were you in, if I may ask?
Were you for Trump? For Clinton? Someone else?
What about the state you're in?
Are they red, blue, undetermined? Which way did they vote? Sorry I'm just incredibly curious about these things.
Did they just stop counting after Trump got the required votes?
That's a shame. You can learn a lot by examining how people vote.
I also find it quite funny that they're latching on to this "popular vote" thing when it's like less than 1%?
Or somewhere around 1% at least?
Like don't get me wrong, a win is a win, but that margin is TINY.
That's not really a lot to latch on to.
I thought california is traditionally blue?
California is also the highest populated.
I haven't done the math, but if the idea behind the electoral college is correct, then its votes-to-population ratio should be slightly lower than low population states.
Texas is red as fuck lol
You have no heating? ๐ฆ
Which is funny because *Austin* is extremely blue.
I'm sorry to hear that.
Most repubs are against minimum wage which kinda saddens me. I live in the Netherlands, things are *very* different around here.
Our problems are also *very* different.
Our popular right wing candidate often gets equated to Trump which kinda pisses me off because our guy **actually is a Xenophobe**.
Yes that's why it pisses me off.
I don't want Trump and Wilders to be lumped in together, fuck that.
Wilders wants to close all mosques, all muslim schools, close our borders to migrants from all muslim countries, and ban the quran.
*That's* Xenophobia.
It's not the correct way to deal with this problem.
There are much more cost effective and much less dickish ways to deal with this.
Even if you don't use the word race, there's still black people, brown people, asian people, etc. And their biological makeups are different.
So lets just keep it convenient and just keep using the word race.
Muslims aren't a race though.
Anyway
I don't want any extreme measures which will do more harm than good.
Trump had a decent idea.
Still a bit crude, but it's much more decent than a borderline muslim holocaust.
Well you have to understand.
I'm not sure how this happened.
But we seem to have an abnormally large amount of children who failed to grow up.
I find that more concerning than the bullshit they spout.
Well, most social justice warriors are quite literally children who failed to grow up.
The way their brains operate is identical to that of a young teen.
Young teen minds aren't very well developed. They tend to conflate things that are distinct.
What I think of the election? I'm suffering from something that's kinda like a depression. My "happiness" dial never goes any higher than "meh". Except this week I've been singing and dancing. Haven't done that in months. Does that describe what I think of the election?
Well, I'd like to think of it in more pragmatic terms.
It's not like the US loves Russia or Russia loves the US.
But it's much more sensible for both of these super powers to leave the other alone.
Oh, and work together against Islamic State
Because you know, Islamic State is the biggest danger to the western world right now and Clinton most certainly didn't care.
Which brings me to my earlier point.
Rather than purge my country of muslims. We need a better border policy. It's easy. If people want to live here, they should go through an application process and basically be able to guarantee that they'll contribute to society and not just leech off our welfare.
And on top of that, the EU needs to stop fucking antagonizing Putin and start taking some real action against Islamic State.
Of course the EU is never going to do that. So there's only one other option.
The Netherlands needs to make like Britain and gtfo.
Well, my hope is that one day circumstances will force the red pill down their fucking throats, after which they self destruct because they can't handle the truth.
While I won't discount that possibility, I'm not quite as worried as you are.
You see.
There comes a point in everyone's life, when a human being becomes an adult.
It's inevitable.
Eventually circumstances will become so dire, they will *have* to grow up.
Or kill themselves, which is also fine.
Well, having an inner child and growing up aren't mutually exclusive.
I grew up when I was about 10, I think?
I was my parents' caretaker. Growing up kinda happens.
I say 'was', they're still alive, but I now leave most of the caretaking to other people.
Having grown up in times of peace, and having a very anti-military mindset. I honestly don't think I have any ability to make a decision on this matter.
I have no idea what these people achieved or what they went through, so it's hard for me to determine what it is they earned.
But uhhh, whatever it may be that they earned, they deserve it, if you know what I mean?
lol that's bullshit. I have no idea what they went through, but military types deserve to be set for life.
As much as I dislike military types, these people put their lives on the line for the sake of others.
Also what do you mean at war for 19 years?
I would never accept being drafted. I will not be put in a situation where I have to kill people to fight in someone else's war that I never asked for. Worst case scenario I'd be militia.
I'll tolerate one final battle against Islamic State.
This business in the middle east needs to stop but those guys are dangerous.
Not to mention interfering with other people's problems is what helped Islamic State become what they are int he first place.
Well he is. I mean, I wish he wasn't, but he's all we got right now.
Same way everyone else does.
Leave it alone.
We've been leaving North Korea to their own devices for decades and everything's worked out so far.
I don't care that they're a nuclear power. If they ever decide to use it, North Korea will no longer exist.
By which I mean like, the literal piece of land that is called North Korea will no longer exist.
It'll just be ocean.
We do have some safeguards against nuclear weapons too, you know?
Oh right there's the fact that their nuclear weapon isn't even fully functional. XD
Do you know what the best way is to disarm a nuclear bomb?
The best way to disarm a nuclear bomb is to blow it up.
