How do you do fellow internet aficionados
Wasn't exactly expecting such intellectual superiority in my first few seconds of the server
Why me?
Something I've been thinking on lately is The Joker, particularly since Kobe's death. I'm someone who's grown up with gallows humor and now when a tragedy happens I usually end up making a joke as my first reaction. However I've noticed that many people don't like it, and that's not the point, but it is important.
The news about Kobe's death kind of annoyed me. I think a total of 8 people died, but maybe other than the daughter no one cared about the others. I made some jokes and talked about it with others that barely knew who he was and acted like they were personally effected by this, often saying "death isn't funny" or something. And I can't help but think about not even a week ago when we were joking about suicide and school shootings, but a celeb dies in an accident and that's off limits?
Beyond this assume they aren't fellow dark humor enthusists. There is an immediate condemnation of the humor by most people. I got a few, "if this were a comedy club" or "it's not the time/place", but I upon asking when/where I simply get "well not here and now". Furthermore I'd like to add that this isn't spontaneous, I didn't just crack a dark joke in the middle of a conversation on someone's grandma, some new game, or anything. We were having a bit of banter and I thought it was timely and well obviously I think it's funny.
So... I suppose the purpose of this is why do we care and why is there such passion to not only disown, but actively condemn a dark joke? Even when I mentioned that it's how I deal with negative emotions people didn't care.
I'm not necessarily implying this has something to do with culture as a whole, but I suppose why it has me interested is the thought that it seems very similar to people who "hear the wrong opinions".
Right but isn't strange that people act like they care? To me it feels very reminiscent of confirmation bias. Have you ever talked with someone who "isn't into politics" or "doesn't like to talk about it", but seem to have a fully formed opinion until it's questioned? It's exactly the same reaction
I agree, though I think a solution might be possible from thinking on it more. If it's the same reaction then if we can find a way to work around it then we can better combat all bad opinions. Maybe I'm thinking a little too big, but I feel like there's something about it that could help
