We knew raspberry farmers and they told us how they struggled with foreign purchases. (This is an example) Apparently the french and german would come to hungary and ask for a price for the raspberries, farmer says 100, the french would say 80, which would be too low but raspberries need to be harvested and processed within a couple of days or they go bad, so by the 2nd day of bargaining they have to accept the 80 offer but at that point the foreigner says 60 instead, and at this point the farmer becomes desperate and has to sell it or nobody would buy it. Protection against these cases are important or else nobody wants to produce raspberries anymore and the shelves will be filled with foreign raspberries. Domestic factories like canned food factories could fix this but the EU would never give money for something that would hinder western european economic interests
