yep
felt big
My Taiwan news source is super fast
it just hit like 30 seconds ago for me
bigger than yesterday's?
dunno, maybe smaller
significant swaying on my end
People in Tainan felt it
And you felt it in Taipei
so my guess would be around Hualien again
how fucking shit
another earthquake
is this the end of Taiwan? 😦
no need to guess. last 150 earthquakes are all from hualien
I didn't visit Ali Shan yet 😦
Taiwan can't break now 😦
And I also wanted to go to Kenting one more time 😦
Don't break Taiwan!
alright while we wait for the earthquake report let me guess the magnitude
5.2
Are you in Taiwan?
yeah. Taiwan ain't breaking anytime soon lol
where in Taiwan are you?
Hsinchu now
CWB's website is getting hammered, seems like
but living on the 13th floor doesn't help at all
mag 5.7, it says
I was chatting with my gf's sister in Tainan and she felt it apparently
5.7 holy shit
so annoying. all the bigger earthquakes happen at midnight
http://www.cwb.gov.tw/index.htm is not loading for me anymore
give it a minute or two. im guessing everybody is refreshing that page right now
and I figured out a way to roughly estimate when the next 4.5 mag or higher earthquake will happen
after every 7~9 medium (3.5 ~4 ish) earthquake, there will be a significantly stronger one
after 40 mins passed after a 4.5 or larger earthquake without any smaller earthquakes, there will be another larger one
I know that a bunch of Italians are renting a lot of computing power in Lugano's super computing centre in an attempt to predict seismic activity
you should tell them your find 😄
Damn it where are the cali quakes
My find is based on 8 hours of data. its hardly reliable <:thenk:329322130804047872>
it loaded for me a few minutes ago
I went to a presentation of them
sick stuff they're doing
earth quakes are a huge energy source
imagine if we could absorb that
with your qt little island shaking like that, if we could absorb the energy, you could power your night markets for years
I think it's a super exciting field
and yet we know so little about it
nice pun, i saw that^
what pun?
`Super exciting field`
"field"
oh
not intentional, actually
why are Taiwanese people so depressive?
not depressive, just too laid back
"this is good enough"
etc.
i am too but i mean, that's just how it is
I mean is kinda true
If you're in a building that will collapse, then youre fucked already
depends on the strength of the earthquake, the building and your luck
you might just be trapped for a few days
you have like, 5 seconds to get out if the quake is large enough to seriously damage your building
Assuming you fall with the building and the building is not a 10+ story building or something like that
You might be trapped in the crashed building
a few bottles of water and a radio might save your life
are there anti earthquake building standards in taiwan?
yes, putting empty barrels of oil into the walls
hah
some of the best in the world if what i've been told is correct
but yeah, that too
@porco true, I have my abandoned building exploration bag ready for emergnecies
have you ever seen the Taipei 101s earthquake "defense" system?
you can take the lift up and see that huge ball
I went there once, was impressive
lmao giant red ball in the middle of the buiulding . sounds funny at first, but its an engineering masterpeice
lol
it actually is
I just wonder how much the suspensions actually help
I mean if the building starts moving
I was up at the observation deck during an earthquake once
that must have been super exciting
did the ball move?
i just wonder if you even felt anything
no i couldn't see any apparent moving
that one we could see is a model on display actually
yes the 101 is impressive
I just looked it up, the ball is the real ball. not a model on display.
but the bottom is supported by hydraulic stuff so it doesn't look like its moving
yes the hydraulic suspensions
I am just questioning their size compared to the size of the ball
its protection seems somewhat limited though
the hydraulic suspensions seem to be there to limit the movement of the ball so that it doesn't swing out of control
The ball may provide ample suspension from horizontal quakes but the same can't be said for quakes with a lot of vertical movement
if theres vertical movement shits fucked no matter what you do, thankfully thata pretty rare
another small quake right now.
