Like Umberto Eco said in his essay about fascism, the problem with those people is that they believe so hard in their own propaganda about their strength and the weakness of their enemies, they constantly underestimate their enemies, so they always lose.

That may have been the case to an extent with Italy but certainly not with Germany.
