HOUSTON โ€“ A suspect was shot by a Homeland Security agent while they were serving warrants at several homes in southwest Houston early Wednesday.

According to the Houston Police Department, it happened around 6 a.m. as DHS and DEA agents were serving warrants at several homes in the 6100 block of Grapevine.

2018-07-11 18:51:31 UTC

As the DHS agents made entry into the home, the resident was shot, police said. The details surrounding the shooting have not been released.

HPD was initially called to the scene in a support role, but will now serve as the lead agency into the shooting itself. They will not be providing information on the investigation as to why DHS and DEA were serving warrants.

The suspect shot was transported to a local hospital in and unknown condition.

ROSHARON, Texas (AP) -- A major with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and three prison guards have been indicted on charges they conspired to plant screwdrivers in an inmate's cell so that the inmate would then face disciplinary measures.

Maj. Juan Jackson and the others are facing charges in Brazoria County, south of Houston, of tampering with governmental records and official oppression.
The Houston Chronicle reports a judge authorized arrest warrants for the men Tuesday. It's not clear if they're in custody. A working phone number for Jackson could not be found.

2018-07-11 18:57:57 UTC

The investigation at the Ramsey Unit began when a mother of a prisoner complained earlier this year.
More than 600 disciplinary cases have been tossed in the wake of the incident and a separate finding that guards had used a quota system in writing up inmates.

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) -- A former camp counselor for the city of Pflugerville is accused of sexually assaulting a then-11-year-old girl for several years.

The victim, who is now 20 years old, recently came forward to the Pflugerville Police Department claiming Cameron Kretsinger, 27, sexually assaulted her starting in 2009 when she was part of the Fireballs group at the City of Pflugerville Summer Camp, according to an arrest affidavit. The "Fireballs" group was for children in 5th and 6th grade.

The victim told police Kretsinger started emailing her in September of 2009 and some of the emails had naked photographs of Kretsinger, according to the affidavit. She said from 2009-2011, she had sexual encounters with the suspect, who was 18 years old when she met him, at various locations.

When detectives spoke with Kretsinger last month, he said he worked as a camp counselor in Pflugerville for five summers from 2009-2013. He told police the first summer he worked there was the summer after he graduated from high school and he would return the other summers when he was on break from Texas Lutheran College.

According to an arrest affidavit, Kretsinger said he "had not pressured or made her" send nude photos of herself. The suspect then went on to admit to his sexual relationship with the victim, continued in the court document.

Kretsinger faces a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a young child.

Parents who had children who attended the camp during Kretsinger's time there should contact the Pflugerville Police Department if they believe their children may have been victimized by calling the dedicated hotline, 512-990-6950. The Police Department is providing victim services resources for those affected.

WASHINGTON, DC โ€” Smoking will no longer be allowed inside public housing nationwide starting on July 31.

The ban from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department was announced back in November 2016 but gave Public Housing Agencies until July 31, 2018 to comply.

HUD explained that the smoke-free rule will reduce damage and maintenance costs tied to smoking, cutback on secondhand smoke and lower the risk of accidental fires.

SALEM, Ore. โ€“ Oregon State Police took a man into custody who they say threatened to shoot and kill people at the Oregon Lottery Headquarters Office in Salem Tuesday.

Police say Jason David Ouellette, 42, from Lebanon, was apprehended for menacing, but was released Tuesday night because of jail overcrowding and because his charge is a misdemeanor.
Investigators say Ouellette sent an email to the lottery office that contained an imminent threat to shoot and kill people. Oregon State Police Gaming Enforcement Detectives and Major Crimes Detectives began investigating the threat.

A suspected smuggler with opium paste taped to his buttocks โ€œlike implantsโ€ was arrested last week while driving on a rural highway in Imperial County near the Salton Sea, Customs and Border Protection officials said Monday.

2018-07-11 19:19:49 UTC

The 28-year-old U.S. citizen pulled up to a Border Patrol checkpoint on State Route 86 east of Ocotillo Wells on Wednesday, CBP spokesman Jose Enriquez Jr. said.

While the man waited to approach the Border Patrol agent stationed at the checkpoint, a drug-sniffing dog zeroed in on his SUV, prompting agents to direct him to the secondary inspection area, Enriquez said. While searching the car and the driver, agents discovered more than 2.2 pounds of opium paste taped to his buttocks.

โ€œIt looked like implants,โ€ Enriquez said. โ€œIt was under his pants and above his underwear.โ€

Hate crimes increased across California for the third straight year in 2017, an uptick experts have blamed on President Trumpโ€™s vitriolic rhetoric toward minorities and the resurgence of hate groups in the state.

There were 1,093 reported hate crimes in California in 2017, a 17.4% increase, according to a report released Monday by the California attorney generalโ€™s office. Hate crimes have increased annually since 2014, jumping roughly 44% in that three-year span, records show.
