mental hospital is to get him fit for trial, in which they will then throw him into prison

if they think he was mental then why can he go sit in jail for the rest of his life for what they claim he did when he wasnt sane

Well, he was already in jail for a while, but before his trial started he requested he get checked by doctors, the state agreed, and he was found unfit for trial. Once they decide he can go on trial he'll be back in jail and obviously put on trial.
