I was looking at some of those construction vehicles and no shit most of them can be built to fit a military AFV niche

An inch or two of tool steel, some rubber filling, you've got ghetto composite armor.

You can rig up cheap cage armor with some steel rebar

If you're on a budget you can get some thick ass wire fencing and put two layers of that over each other so they more or less cover up the gaps of the previous layer, then spot weld that on some just basic steel or even reinforced aluminum rods; poof, there ya go. Actually effective spaced armour/shurtzen

Hell enough layers of mesh will do the same thing
