They have minerals, Alaska has oil but not much else. Other places have oil in far greater amounts than Alaska.

While Mongolia has Mineral deposits that everyone buys, Alaskas Main exports are fish and oil. True some gold exists but you cant have miners without meat. The reason we couldn't use the fish is because if that was a viable way of expanding the population, we would see greater numbers of people in Alaska.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love an icy paradise but Alaska doesn't seem viable for long term food planning. Fish is nice but you only get so much before it's out of season in comparison to Crops that you could make massive amounts of and have food all year round.
