one of my biggest gripes with christianity for the longest time (that is way before I even became nazi) was that every kind of rule of christian god is enforced through fear of punishment.

All it does is make you learn to be conniving and a liar. You think all the hard punishments in the army make you do things exactly as your superiors tell you? Sure with omnipresent god its different, but most people don't get struck down by lightning on the spot for bad deeds. After a while it doesnt even threaten anyone anymore.
