plenty of people literally just see it as a power play, especially people in politics. they want to promote ideas that sustain their power and they want to suppress ideas that threaten their power

so they create division among their supporters by telling them "you are the good guys, and those are the evil villains, and you must stop them at all costs"

so naturally they see any contrary political viewpoint as being "evil" and they want to oppress it, because they start from an inability to critically examine issues and come to their own conclusions, and a lack of concern about whether or not something is *true*

they only care about having the *correct* and *virtuous* viewpoint according to their peers and mentors

and anything that threatens that is by definition evil

... though of course this is only done for the sake of promoting division and shoring up support for powerful political interests

if a right-winger could convince a left-winger that they both *do* care about things like poverty and health care, but simply disagree on the *best solution* from a practical point of view, we might get somewhere

but everyone is too busy impugning one another's motives

at least "video games are evil" is a debatable policy issue

not "people who don't believe video games are evil are themselves evil"
