@BigBadSaxon - ID That sounds like the place that you get to go to once you get to lifting level 99
would you guys consider wrestling and boxing to be forms of European martial arts?
I suppose, yeah
Of course and throw kickboxing in there as well
@Aleis⊕)))#9030 absolutely. And wrestling is one of the most effective martial arts in the world.
Wrestling is a must IMHO
I remember back in the day when everyone said bjj was the most effective martial art style. Then the American wrestlers came along and used body control to stop the bjj practitioners. Cannot choke or arm bar anyone when you cannot move. I think Russan Sambo is the best for grappling.
@halfMc Disagree. Watch the first couple dozen UFCs. BJJ beat wrestling 100% of the time in the days before MMA evolved. Wrestling does not teach submission techniques. We have wrestlers come into my gym and it's the same story: they are experts at getting us to the mat but, once there, it's our game.
The other thing about BJJ v wrestling is that you don't use your legs as arms in wrestling.
Also, wrestlers aren't taught how to fight from their backs.
Sambo, agree, that's a different story.
Yeah like I said in the beginning bjj was the best, the the Amercan wrestlers figured out how to control them
Sambo is a combo of jj wrestling and judo so it's crazy grappling
@Deleted User for example the first time I saw a wrestler figure it out was when Dan Henderson fought Anderson Silva, if you watch the first round of that fight Henderson controls Silva's body. Dan ended up catching a knee in the 2nd round and losing the fight but it showed that wrestling can neutralize jujitsu
That was UFC 82 in 2008. By that time, MMA had been a thing for almost a decade. You should watch the first 20 to 40 UFCs between 1993 and 2003. There wasn't american wrestlers beating BJJ practictioners, everyone (including strikers) figured it all out at the same. Right around the time of Randy Couture, Chuck Liddel, Matt Hughes, etc
Yeah when I was little the Gracias were my favorite, Royce used to choke everyone out with his ghee.
I need to go re-watch those as an adult cuz I only remember them through kids eyes. But again that is why I was excited when Henderson figured it out...It's not that exciting to watch though cuz the wrestlers look like they are just laying on them.
And how come Damion Maia never got a Title shot? He destroyed Gunner Nelson which is a pretty big deal I thought
The UFC discriminates against grapplers because you get more PPV sales when strikers fight. Exceptions are there, but all the young fighters they promote and give big fights to are primarily strikers who work on take down defense and 'anti-bjj'.
That is true cuz casual viewers don't know what's happening when you grapple. That's why it was good that Joe Rogan comentated back in the mid 2000s because he would explain it. That's how I learned what I was watching.
I'm pumped that my cousins agreed to watch the fights with me this Saturday...they used to be all ...muh it's to violent, they will be hooked soon enough
whether its more effective or not, I'd like to learn real wrestling techniques for the sake of heritage, or have my children learn it.
but I do think it is effective...the man who invented Krav Maga (Israeli self defense) based most of it on European-style wrestling and boxing
My martial arts class focuses almost entirely on striking with a few throws and no grappling
I'm planning on enrolling in a BJJ class in the fall to augment my arsenal
@Aleis⊕ccidentalis you can't go wrong training in wrestling. It is very effective.
Let us not forget, the deadliest of techniques........ 😉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU8DDJRwjkI
What do you guys think of LA fitness? I know of lots of gyms that that are known for ripping people off, but it seems like a pretty good place
Pretty generic
Relatively fair prices
Good things like saunas and all the weights you would need
Nothing special but if it's close and accessible do it
Good content
