i gotta vote in a few days

2018-10-10 06:12:33 UTC

presidential election in Indonesia is in 2019

2018-10-10 06:13:44 UTC

i gotta vote for local stuff i believe, cant remember

2018-10-10 06:14:48 UTC

but damn, I'm more eager to see who's going to be the new mayor after her term ends next year

2018-10-10 06:15:02 UTC

heh

2018-10-10 06:15:19 UTC

since it would be a tough job to continue her excellent work

2018-10-10 06:15:20 UTC

federal level politics here, honestly at this point i dont see how those matter anymore

2018-10-10 06:15:42 UTC

it does matter here tho

2018-10-10 06:15:44 UTC

yea i been pretty happy with the mayor we had here for the last few years

2018-10-10 06:15:58 UTC

but im very unhappy with his party on the federal level

2018-10-10 06:16:33 UTC

since the current mayor and the one before her had been excellent mayors and helped to clean up the mess from the new order era

2018-10-10 06:17:05 UTC

tidied up the streets, made canals and better sewer system

2018-10-10 06:17:36 UTC

I'm both eager and worried on what kind of candidate will come forward

2018-10-10 06:17:56 UTC

I know nothing of indonesian politics but didnt u guys have some serious authoritarian issues not so long ago? or am i confusing that with some of the other countries there

2018-10-10 06:18:40 UTC

yeah, we had an american-backed authoritarian regime from 1966 to 1998

2018-10-10 06:19:29 UTC

where people had been killed and jailed for diverging from the reigning party

2018-10-10 06:20:08 UTC

and we've had some transition era to dismantle much of the damages

2018-10-10 06:20:16 UTC

although very slowly

2018-10-10 06:20:25 UTC

see thats the thing with these authoritarian regimes

2018-10-10 06:20:29 UTC

they never last

2018-10-10 06:20:44 UTC

Its always a question about how much damage is going to be done before it collapses

2018-10-10 06:22:03 UTC

Well i always think of those things and then it puts thing in perspective from the stupid things we need to deal with here

2018-10-10 06:22:25 UTC

I remember that we were sent to another town to avoid troubles since there were plenty of anti-chinese tensions

2018-10-10 06:22:32 UTC

like having a 30 year+ long debate about wether or not we gonna build a bridge.

2018-10-10 06:23:35 UTC

ye man i cant really imagine how that is

2018-10-10 06:23:49 UTC

i only heard stuff like that from my grandparents

2018-10-10 06:25:09 UTC

there were riots, rapes and lootings in the capital as the regime changed.

2018-10-10 06:25:27 UTC

it was a rather tense situation

2018-10-10 06:25:57 UTC

especially when there were insurrections and racial civil wars that erupted

2018-10-10 06:26:18 UTC

oh yeah i know about that

2018-10-10 06:28:19 UTC

like the massacre of sampit, where maduranese were persecuted by borneo-born dayaks; Ambon civil war, where christians and muslims fought a bloody civil war; Rise of GAM (aceh freedom movement); rise of OPM (free papua organisation); etc.

2018-10-10 06:29:20 UTC

and the advent of 9/11 also resulted in the rise of wahhabists and religious extremists who were heavily suppressed during the authoritarian regime

2018-10-10 06:29:46 UTC

nice

2018-10-10 06:30:03 UTC

we got a party here now called "islam"

2018-10-10 06:30:12 UTC

and everyone was hysterical about it when it popped up

2018-10-10 06:30:38 UTC

eh.... we've always had an islamic party in Indonesia. heck, even before it was called Indonesia

2018-10-10 06:30:45 UTC

We dont

2018-10-10 06:30:49 UTC

😄

2018-10-10 06:30:54 UTC

when it was still called Dutch East Indies

2018-10-10 06:31:54 UTC

the "conservative" islamists party had mostly been moderate here

2018-10-10 06:32:54 UTC

Unlike our friend at the party "islam"
