The pain of childbirth comes from the contractions more than the actual stretch, because the body *is* designed to accomodate it. It's the same reason throwing up hurts.

I saw an analysis a while back talking about whether it could function as an analogy to childbirth and consensus was whilst the location of pain wasn't identical (shallow as opposed to deep internal) the pain was produced in the same way and with the same intensity so they said it worked well enough.
