Hacking isn't restricted to web technologies, or even networking or computers at all. I've attended hacking conferences and there were workshops on everything from lockpicking to social engineering.

A lot of the hacking I do for fun revolves around pre-OS software like bootROMs, loaders, EFIs, etc.
