the question of how can the earth be flat if the water it was created on is spherical in nature and still holds that same spherical shape to this day?

2018-08-12 05:06:19 UTC

@MR VLAK You only assume the spherical nature - this has never been observed or scientifically proven by anyone.

2018-08-12 05:07:01 UTC

water by its nature without external influence is what? a sphere

Water takes the shape of the INSIDE of a container - not the OUTSIDE. When you pour a cup of tea, do you pour the water on the inside or outside of the cup?

2018-08-12 05:08:56 UTC

there was water before God created land. No containers...

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

2018-08-12 05:12:32 UTC

Yeah I'm pretty sure the waters were divided from the waters and there is water above the firmament. Can't really prove that yet but its interesting.

2018-08-12 05:15:31 UTC

That is very interesting actually. It illustrates it as a globe with "earth" as a flat circle inside it.

2018-08-12 05:16:27 UTC

"The face of the waters" - sphere doesn't have a face it's the same from all sides. But like the face of a clock is flat. Water is provably and logically flat dude. And seventy percent of the earths surface is covered in water.

2018-08-12 05:17:53 UTC

@MR VLAK I am truly sick and tired of talking to you now. We can agree that we will never agree and move on.

2018-08-12 05:18:35 UTC

We can. But then we have to agree not to post Flat or Sphere Earth stuff here?

2018-08-12 05:21:16 UTC

@MR VLAK Nope, just that you and me will not ever come to a conclusion on the matter. All avenues have been exhausted here and from here it's just a waste of everyone's time. Go do some actual research, and come back when you actually have some proof of your own you can back up with more than just your mouth.

2018-08-12 05:22:38 UTC

Fine we carry on then. Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form. Yet you claim it flat because a sphere doesn't have a face

Will be doing day and night tests. Got houses at both ends which will make it much easier to spot targets at night across the water.

Please take air temperature measurements so we can calculate the amount of refraction

This app calculates how much a distant object is obscured by the earth's curvature, and makes the following assumptions:
light travels in straight lines

You can see 1.1 km far, and the curve change to 3 m drop over the 7km, hu, uh? Hi Pythagoras.

Should you not be accounting for refraction when calculating the hidden height? This is explained by Andrew Young here:

https://aty.sdsu.edu/explain/atmos_refr/horizon.html
https://aty.sdsu.edu/explain/atmos_refr/bending.html

If you aren't going to include this in the calculation then you at least need to state so clearly on the calculator page.

Please, could you explain how did you get h1 calculation from the second line?
Where is gone the 2Rh1 from squaring the left side of equation?
Thanks!

The formula laid out doesn't caluclate distance well, as line of sight is not the measure of distance across a globe. instead I would make the assumption that the distance is an arc segment. This has the added benefit that when d_surface_0 < d_surface_1, the heigh for an obscuring object is calculated.

Example python code

from math import pi,inf,acos,cos
R=6371*1000
h_1 = 2
d_surf_0 = R*pi

theta_1 = acos(R/(h_1+R))
d_surf_1 = R*theta_1
print("horizon: %.02f" % d_surf_1)
d_surf_2 = d_surf_0 - d_surf_1
theta_2 = d_surf_2/R
if theta_2 > pi/2:
h_2 = inf
else:
h_2 = R/cos(theta_2)-R

print("height: %.02f" % h_2)

__Experiment 1: Watch a lunar eclipse__
Things you’ll need: functioning eyes, the moon, and a telescope (optional).

Every now and again, the Earth passes between the moon and the sun, completely blocking its light and casting a shadow across the moon called a lunar eclipse. If you look closely while this happens, you would notice that the Earth’s shadow forms an arc as it creeps across our view of the moon.

You might respond, “You’ve shown the Earth is round, but couldn’t it be round, but still flat — a flat disc?” Well, your eyes and telescope would also spot the 3D spherical nature of the moon. The Flat Earth Society does admit that the moon, the sun and other planets are indeed spherical, but claim that the “Earth is not a planet,” and unlike other celestial bodies, is flat.

So let’s ignore the moon for now and examine the other member of the eclipse trifecta: the sun.
