Italy had potential
They had over a decade to get prepared for a major war
It wouldn't even be that hard to get up to the power level of say, France
All they needed was to industrialize southern Italy and develop their then-current military tech and reorganize the army
The US was never a proper nation to begin with
It was on it's way to having it's own White American Ethnogenesis but it was halted with all the non white populations booming
As for Italy I can't say it's a proper nation either since history the various regions have been distinctly linguistically and culturally, existed as separate states.
Not to mention that they're distinct genetically. The South is primarily Proto-Indo-European and Greek while the North is mostly Celtic iirc

Though there is still some divide between the North and South I don't expect a balkanization of the Italian peninsula to happen soon
