If you read the rest of the FAQs, it becomes fairly clear that "contribution" is usually defined as having a cost to the contributor. In the bakery example, it is clear that the baker's donation is valued at the cost of the discount offered to campaign officials relative to normal customers, and the baker has to charge at least what it costs him/her to bake the goods. Information itself has no definable cost on its own. There is no direct legal statute discussing the transfer of information with no money changing hands and no quid pro quo, but it can be gleamed from the other rules that there is nothing inherently illegal about a foreigner volunteering their time or non commercial services to a candidate as long as they aren't incurring cost, being paid for what they're doing, or making decisions for the campaign.
So again, there is plenty of legal precedent protecting Trump. Jr's conversation with a Russian lawyer claiming to have dirt on hillary.
