I am writing to you from Charlottesville, where I have lived for nine years, to tell you briefly about what has happened here.
Last Friday night, a large group of heavily armed men descended upon the University of Virginia here, carrying torches and assaulting people as they went. They laid siege to a church that had an interfaith gathering of ministers/etc that had come to pray for peace and stand up for justice. In the picture from Time magazine below, you will see them as they surround about 30 people in front of the UVa Rotunda, heart of the campus and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Those brave citizens of Charlottesville who went out to confront that mob were beaten, sprayed with fuel and attacked with torches. A good friend of mine and former co-worker is among them. He is now in the hospital, having suffered a stroke from a blood clot which took him down yesterday - a tiki torch to the neck had apparently damaged his carotid artery. He's lucky to be alive.
