I mean, I'd like to think that I can stay above the fray and not be influenced by the group, and I do my best not to slide into that mindset, but I wouldn't claim to be immune to it. But you've just gotta be mentally on your gaurd all the time. Humans are naturally tribalistic and for most people simply picking a side is easier than educating themself

It's a balancing act though. It's easy to become tribal, yet at the same time people will try to 'stay vigilant' - which often results in what we see in many tribes of all political persuasions; various forms of 'purity testing'
I mean, shit, consider how if a group of people try not to pick a side.. they wind up creating their own side that they all gravitate towards
And then all of them, again, try to be vigilant not to fall into groupthink
