I always just say that crime is still higher than it was in the 50s, back when there weren't cameras everywhere and people weren't being tracked 24/7. Yes, crime is down from its peak in the 80s and early 90s, but again, that has more to do with the rise of modern technology/policing and the lethargy of modern youth than with any social development.

People are also having far fewer children now, and the population is aging, which also lowers crime stats.

But that's masking one problem with another.
