gender is by definition a combination of how you identify, present yourself, and interact with society

Sex and gender are both constructs

so it is at least partially contingent on individual determination

People might have them as identities, but that doesnt mean that they are an idenity. Just as humanity is something someone might identity with, but thats not what it is.

Such oppression is very much a part of history and you have to take that into account when discussing this.
