what is us customary units?

What most folks call "Imperial units" as used in the US

It's called US Customary because it differs from Imperial in certain ways

including volumes

Imperial is how the Brits use it

But yeah, on the engineering front, consider the following: If you're told to find gravitational potential energy but weren't given a formula or unit conversions, which would you find easier:
Height in meters, mass in kilograms, and informed that the answer will be in Joules
or
Height in feet, weight in pounds, and informed that the answer will be in foot-pounds

Meanwhile on the mathematics side, base 12 is generally significantly easier to work with given that it has more factors than 10 (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12, versus 1, 2, 5, 10 respectively)

and on the everyday front, 2s, 3s, and 4s are easier to mentally approximate than 10s

Then just on the nomenclature and size front, a tablespoon generally makes for a damn good approximation, if not measuring instrument, for what constitutes a tablespoon of a substance

And guess what common household item can similarly be used to approximate the US customary unit "teaspoon"

Anyway, back to talk about history and annexing Canada

There were repeated proposals, attempts, and invitations on the part of the US for Canada to get annexed

We almost got Newfoundland back in 1946

It was close

But Congress rejected their invitation

And the Brits prevented them from holding such a referendum

much like how the Brits forbade British Columbia from seeking American annexation following the Alaska Purchase, despite BC having been led by an annexationist governor at the time

Also in 1946, we offered $100,000,000 to Denmark if they'd sell us Greenland

In 1917 they had accepted $25,000,000 for their share of the West Indies, for perspective
