A republic has to be democratic.
But not democratic for the people.
It could just as easily be democratic for the elite, I.e nobility, the rich, other politicians etc. These are not new concepts.
Venice was a republic for example.

I think the last viable third party... was the prohibition party
as far as a third party actually getting any serious political clout, at least
most other smaller parties, as soon as they actually start to get traction, seem to wind up fracturing themselves with people getting waaaaaaay ahead of themselves int he powergrab sweepstakes

Part of the problem there could be that third parties arise from the fringe of one end of the spectrum
