@Weaboo Kempeitai iirc, Treasury Department was the department which enforced alcohol prohibition. It also concerned the IRS which was invented around that same time. I'm a bit vague, though, so it might be better to actually look this up.

nah, basically, when federal prohibition was passed, it was with the caveat that they would create a federal income tax to make up for the revenue losses on whiskey

and when prohibition was ended, they never repealed this tax

2019-10-17 23:34:42 UTC

it was basically one of those departmental jurisdiction quirks on the surface, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something else going on there, as well

2019-10-17 23:34:50 UTC

i thought income tax was passed to fund WWI?

@HemRoy5 Sorry, details were a bit fuzzy. There was an association with the events, but they weren't passed at the same time. Federal Income Tax was passed in 1913, but was then used to make up the revenue losses, and provided more leverage for prohibition. In its initial form, the income tax didn't apply to most people, as they did not meet the earnings requirements, but I suspect this was changed around the time prohibition was passed.

"Two other amendments to the Constitution were championed by dry crusaders to help their cause. One was granted in the Sixteenth Amendment (1913), which replaced alcohol taxes that funded the federal government with a federal income tax.[57] The other was women's suffrage, which was granted after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920; since women tended to support prohibition, temperance organizations tended to support women's suffrage.[57]"
