Tips for not being an idiot when trying to befriend Chinese people in the US?

2018-08-12 09:13:30 UTC

make sure to ask them about their opinion about tibet, tianmen and their colonial history

2018-08-12 09:13:43 UTC

i've done that

2018-08-12 09:13:43 UTC

proceed by asking to watch winnie the pooh

2018-08-12 09:13:46 UTC

i don't think they care

2018-08-12 09:13:47 UTC

tbh

2018-08-12 09:19:16 UTC

@JHWH I think you misread, I said not being an idiot.

2018-08-12 09:20:01 UTC

dont ask them why theyre laughing because they wont be able to explain it

2018-08-12 09:20:05 UTC

just let them laugh

2018-08-12 09:20:27 UTC

my bad, then just dont call them jackie chan and generally dont be an idiot.

2018-08-12 09:21:30 UTC

I want to ask that other stuff eventually, but I know you need to break the ice first.

2018-08-12 09:22:15 UTC

And that if they still have close family in China I'd probably abort.

2018-08-12 09:22:45 UTC

in my experience they are either chomping at the bit to tell westerners how they feel, or they won't reveal their opinions until they are on their deathbed

2018-08-12 09:22:47 UTC

there is no in between

2018-08-12 09:22:50 UTC

the only chinese friend i have is from hk lol

2018-08-12 09:23:59 UTC

@bentech did he have opinions about the umbrella movement?

2018-08-12 09:24:11 UTC

nah he doesnt have many ties with hk

2018-08-12 09:39:26 UTC

Here's a get-rich-quick scheme that might work.

1. Move to a US state where employees are protected from discrimination based on their political affiliations and activities.
2. Apply to a job you're qualified for to a Chinese employer wearing clothes supporting Taiwan, Tibet, etc. They probably don't know about political discrimination laws.
3. After they don't hire you, sue for discrimination.

2018-08-12 09:48:03 UTC

2018-08-12 09:48:34 UTC

2018-08-12 09:49:07 UTC

i think xiexie (thank you) is all you need to know if they can speak english

2018-08-12 09:49:54 UTC

I'll try to excel in good phonology instead.

2018-08-12 09:55:28 UTC

@(import (srfi 151)) ask if they're japanese

2018-08-12 09:55:36 UTC

2018-08-12 09:55:57 UTC

Wouldn't that be bad?

2018-08-12 10:05:21 UTC

not if you follow up by saying you're a total baka

2018-08-12 10:30:50 UTC

2018-08-12 13:37:37 UTC

Honestly might be the most useful too

2018-08-12 13:37:52 UTC

You can probably get by with conversational Hindi

2018-08-12 13:38:07 UTC

Conversational Japanese or Chinese won't get you anywhere

2018-08-12 13:40:03 UTC

Hmm. Interesting

2018-08-12 13:40:18 UTC

Maybe I'll just start learning kanji
