Did the NYTs forget to look up the word almost is?
Funny story about abstract words like 'almost' is that they don't have any scale inherent, so 'almost eighteen years' is, by definition, also 'almost nineteen years' by the weight of the time period given.
It is true that using it in that context typically involves a scale of less than twelve months, but if they are going to get that petty, I can too.
