i was making a play on the fact i have no friends
so having my echo to talk to would be nice
The group isn't operating with diametrically opposed presuppositions, like how it is with leftists vs conservatives and nothing ends up getting done
besides, *everyone else* isn't necessarily excluded. I'm sure there's democrats who watch Beauty and the Beta who happen to be anti-SJW
and that's one of the major pillars of the show
I guess I'd rather just discuss an idea rather than trying to impose it on someone who disagrees
I'm the kind of guy who would rather sell my ideas than to jam them down someone's throat
If we're not talking about an echo chamber that just likes to hang out, but talking about a group that is trying to work together to get things done, it's better to have everyone on board objectively
When I brought it up, I was referring to Twitter and Gab
the rate it's going, conservatives won't go on Twitter because they're all booted, and leftists won't go on Gab because they won't participate in a platform they can't control
J Edgar - Do you believe or trust most people are smart enough to make decisions that will affect others or even have a decent time horizon to recognize a good idea (good in the long run)?
normally yes, but in the late political landscape, my faith in that is slipping rapidly
So what you meant by trying to make the country a better place, you simply meant having a neutral place where anyone can feel welcomed and exchange ideas on equal footing
I get ya
or even discuss in general
Yeah it's plain to see online discourse is very, very lopsided on platforms
I'm really afraid that if we keep going deeper into our corners, we're going to fall into another civil war, and I don't believe it's going to be as lopsided as the conservatives love to say
It's a very tricky thing to grasp. Like I mentioned, being diametrically opposed with values is something that can't be reconciled. As in pro-lifers putting inherent value on life, and pro-abortionists putting inherent value on the woman's right to decide what is done to her body regardless on how far that goes
they will simply talk past each other, and not directly address questions posed
"Oh so you think murdering children is okay"
"Oh so you want to control women"
I really think that if the people on the ground got together and talked, they'd find out that they have a lot more in common than they really think. I used to think that about all people on the right and the left, but the governmental opposition to Trump has shaken that belief
I agree. And people changing their mind isn't impossible
I legitimately think the general population on both the right and the left both want to make the country better for everyone, I just think that they generally disagree on how to do so
Right. Their values are fundamentally different
I don't even think it's that
I think it's much more shallow than that
You can actually trace values back from political opinions
when you boil the arguments right down to it, both the right and the left, on the level of citizenry, want to make the country a better place for all people, but the fundamental disagreement is what the role of the government is in that pursuit
the left sees it as a necessary tool, and the right sees it as a hindrance
I think if you go backwards far enough, sure I think the lines can blur and it may seem like we all want the same thing. But I think that's for the very vague and ambiguous notions
so you're on the train that the left is evil
"on the level of citizenry, want to make the country a better place for all people" I disagree, you said the last time we spoke that you understand racial differences, do you understand in group preference as well? @J Edgar
I would compare it more to situations similar to what I mentioned, the value of inherent life of an infant vs. value of complete women's health freedom
Or the value of wanting strong borders vs. someone who says the earth shouldn't have any borders.
It's not good vs evil, but differing presuppositions against each other
It's someone's first principles, or starting point
They will justify their values with evidence. Even if it's irrational, some will desperately justify it with anything they can get with the worldview they cling to
I guess I don't follow where you are going with that, Kayla, but I do have to call it at that. I have to work at 5:30 central time, and this is my first week off second shift
yeah we'll talk later then
but there is a method to my madness I promise
I shit you all not...my friend said gender is fluid.
I asked him what class he learned that in, sarcastically saying in my head "Watch it be sociology"
Lo and behold!!!! ....he learned that shit in sociology.
