I have had it explained to me that the Jews of the OT were a separate group from the Ashkenazi group and that the OT Jews abandoned their position as the chosen people by mixing with the Canaanites. I'll look into the Holy Reich. I see that position, however, as revisionism. The most simple explanation would be that the Jews wrtoe these texts to preserve their people and thus the religion as a whole best serves their people and not ours.
