@parrott You're the go-to guy for IT stuff, right?

2017-02-04 19:01:34 UTC

Yes. I'm the guy responsible for everything that's broken at any given moment.

2017-02-04 19:01:47 UTC

You got a HDD reccomendation for a simple 2 drive NAS?

2017-02-04 19:01:58 UTC

I'm not sure how much longer I can trust my laptop

2017-02-04 19:02:08 UTC

gonna run it in raid

2017-02-04 19:02:21 UTC

paranoid about losing data

2017-02-04 19:04:21 UTC

How "warm" is the storage?

2017-02-04 19:04:55 UTC

Like, are you going to be accessing and changing it routinely, or is it more for long-term storage?

2017-02-04 19:05:32 UTC

quite often. i wasn't sure if I should go with WD reds for longevity

2017-02-04 19:05:48 UTC

or just switch out drives more often every year or two

2017-02-04 19:07:11 UTC

I haven't kept up that well with what's on the market. I'd say one of the mature and affordable magnetic drives would be the way to go.

2017-02-04 19:07:16 UTC

Or...two...as it were.

2017-02-04 19:07:42 UTC

guess it doesn't matter so much. just getting another opinion

2017-02-04 19:10:00 UTC

Cool, nerd stuff.

2017-02-04 19:10:40 UTC

Avoid the SSDs. That's really all I got.

2017-02-04 19:13:46 UTC

SSDs are great and wonderful for one's day-to-day work, but the magnetic drives are the way to go in your particular context. Raid 1 with an affordable off-the-shelf non-fancy WD brand sounds like it would fit the bill.

2017-02-04 19:15:28 UTC

Just pony up for a decent UPS to go along with it that also protects the ethernet cable if the NAS isn't wireless.

The best drive in the world can't do shit if it's zapped or gets corrupted by a power outage. And configure your NAS to communicate wiht your UPS, so that when it runs out of juice, the NAS powers down gracefully rather than shitting the bed.

2017-02-04 19:22:42 UTC

Yeah, nerd shit.

Who else lives in Indiana. I'm looking at Madison.

2017-02-04 20:26:54 UTC

?

2017-02-04 20:35:30 UTC

Paoli.

2017-02-04 20:52:53 UTC

I meant beside you. Know anything about Madison, IN?

2017-02-04 20:54:56 UTC

How far is Paoli from Louisville?

2017-02-04 21:00:13 UTC

I live in Scottsburg.

2017-02-04 21:00:38 UTC

Paoli is about an hour and a half I would say.

2017-02-04 21:00:51 UTC

Madison is an hour or so.

2017-02-04 21:00:56 UTC

I'm 30 minutes.

2017-02-04 21:05:52 UTC

Yikes

2017-02-04 21:06:22 UTC

What's in Scottsburg?

2017-02-04 21:08:02 UTC

Fucking nothing.

2017-02-04 21:08:06 UTC

A walmart.

2017-02-04 21:08:19 UTC

And some shitty restaurants.

2017-02-04 21:14:01 UTC

I'll try my luck in Madison

2017-02-04 21:14:50 UTC

Scottsburg has an excellent high school cross country course. Got one of my best times there.

2017-02-04 21:15:47 UTC

Are meetups more frequent in Indiana?

2017-02-04 21:17:25 UTC

Yeah, it's not bad.

2017-02-04 21:17:35 UTC

The problem is Indiana is long as fuck.

2017-02-04 21:17:58 UTC

Kentucky is the same.

2017-02-04 21:18:27 UTC

But Madison has a ton of events throughout the year.

2017-02-04 21:23:47 UTC

I'll be in Wisconsin this week
