There's a lot of poor, population dense areas to go along with that too though. And wealthy or not, even if all of Cali seceded, haven't they been buying energy from neighbors for years? I KNOW they rely on neighboring states for water.
I wouldn't be surprised if they need energy. It would really be idiotic b/c then they'd have to renegottiate trade deals with other countries and they wouldn't have the military power projection of the US
