Look up the origin of the word "liberalism".
It was used as an ideology pushing capitalism.
People in Europe use liberal and capitalist as a synonym, but capitalist comes from Marx's critique. They wouldn't call themselves that, just like no national-socialist would call himself a nazi (it's a slur).
US liberals are social-liberals in Europe, they're seen as right-wingers.

@National Trotskyist I know what classical liberalism is, and that guy definitely presents himself as one (I know him from another server, to my displeasure). And of course European liberals are the center-right, they're now attracting what used to be "socialist" parties (look at the bullshittery the PS and PCF are engaging in in France).
