Studying, in the general use of the term, although encouraged by schools, is more of a cheat and is not what your educational objective should be based around.

Studying, in general usage, is going over, i.e. cramming, the material a few days before an examination to retain it only long enough to get the grade.

Test,s in their original intent, are supposed to measure how much you've retained over an extended period. Studying, in the general meaning, would defeat this purpose.

If you did not "study" but you got a good grade, you accomplished what school is supposed to do for you, give you knowledge that you retain for a prolonged period.

Honestly depending on the field I think it's better to teach how to search for the information in a reference book.

Even in the example you gave, you still have to know how to do the work even if you have to look up the specific figures you need to use in a given project.

You cannot just look up how to do the work itself. You need to be taught.
