It also basically reveals why gaming companies resort to loot boxes and stuff like that these days

Yeah, the subscription model by its start was a predatory thing.
Yeah, lots of subscription and "free to play" games rely on exploiting addictive mechanisms

Youtube is a timesink with ads. Social media has a chance for ads. Not much corporate sense behind it, I think the idea is more societal.
Even breaking a leg is better than getting flooded with reviews on IG
