Last Ramadan I had an interesting experience

2019-08-26 16:36:59 UTC

I couldn't go to Walmart at 2am to beat the crowds and get good parking because it was still busy

2019-08-26 16:37:22 UTC

Almost all the customers looked middle Eastern and most were couples

2019-08-26 16:38:18 UTC

tf, walmart is open att 2 am?

2019-08-26 16:38:31 UTC

Yeah it's open 24h, where you from

2019-08-26 16:38:45 UTC

EU we dont have them here

2019-08-26 16:38:50 UTC

Ahh

2019-08-26 16:39:03 UTC

last ramadan i stuffed myself

2019-08-26 16:39:06 UTC

24 hour are small shops usually

2019-08-26 16:39:14 UTC

Well there's a few 24h groceries here, Walmart is the only national one off the top of my head

2019-08-26 16:39:24 UTC

For supermarket i mean

2019-08-26 16:40:34 UTC

Nice to walk through a big open store and don't have to be bothered by anyone but it's also when the restock team is busiest

2019-08-26 16:41:14 UTC

Cuz they can bring big pallets out without worrying about blocking aisles

2019-08-26 16:41:33 UTC

Saw this at 3 different 24h chains so it seems pretty consistent

2019-08-26 16:42:06 UTC

cool

2019-08-26 16:42:22 UTC

supermarkets here are not that big usually

2019-08-26 16:42:53 UTC

they dont have to sell such a wide variety of stuff besides food either

2019-08-26 16:44:09 UTC

I imagine there's different stores for different purposes, the whole hypermarket thing is big here because there's a lot of open space and areas that have a level of development which can benefit from the infrastructure

2019-08-26 16:44:27 UTC

"food deserts", they used to be called

2019-08-26 16:45:37 UTC

So Walmart can move in and basically sell everything the ppl in an area used to have to travel an hour out to a city to get

2019-08-26 16:46:18 UTC

But hypermarkets also exist in suburbs too, cuz first mover advantage...

2019-08-26 16:48:58 UTC

Anyway about Ramadan, they can't eat when the sun is out but i don't think they can do some other stuff either

2019-08-26 16:49:49 UTC

So in the US it seems 24h hypermarkets might have an unusual advantage during these times to sell outside normal business hours

2019-08-26 16:50:36 UTC

Something that would have been completely invisible to me had i not showed up there during the right time of day and the right time of year
