If you don't reveal it in the first place then you just show up and since there wasn't an opportunity for a counter protest, nobody laughs at the counter protesters.
If you announce it a month in advance and the counter protest numbers are still half or less than half your numbers then the counter protest looks weak.

Modern sporting rifle is the term and I'm extra autistic about it, but I totally know what you mean.
The difference is assault rifles are selective fire, meaning that you have a minimum of three settings including the safety position as one of the three.

So for example if you brought an STG44 to show off to the media that yes you are a Nazi, then you would have an assault rifle. But if you bring a legal AR-15 manufactured after 1986 then you have a modern sporting rifle.
When the media is concerned it's always an assault rifle, but it's totally possible that at least one VA guy has some actual assault rifles.
