Polygamy vs monogamy is just a question of whether you want a general guarantee of access to one woman, or the potential for access to many with the risk of dying childless.

Personally I think monogamy is better for social order.

But if unchecked by regulations like banning no-fault divorce or permitting adultery and pre-marital sex, men with the most resources will create harems out of women because women will in a state of nature want to do so.

China seems at least *aware* of the danger that having a large amount of young, fit men without access to women can pose.
