2018-08-20 02:05:04 UTC

Is this channel dead, or does anyone want to read a book together?

2018-08-20 02:05:49 UTC

Currently reading "The Republic for Which It Stands: The United States during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, 1865-1896" by Richard White

2018-08-20 03:59:10 UTC

@Nemets I think it'll pick back up when the school year picks up. This is also a great server for promoting the Guardian's program

2018-08-20 20:22:28 UTC

Does anyone know what I can read on the US history? Something that can give me a good overview since I'd be starting with very basic knowledge (a foreigner here, don't judge).

2018-08-21 00:50:53 UTC

@Nota Bene - NY which era?

2018-08-21 01:41:24 UTC

@Nemets Hmm, all of them from the beginning? My knowledge is really rudimentary. Just need basic facts, with some analysis, what happened when and why.

2018-08-21 01:46:41 UTC

wish there was a good book that summarized the entire history, but just too broad

@Nemets I see.

2018-08-21 01:56:44 UTC

There were a lot of them during Peter the Great and Yekaterina in Russia.

2018-08-21 01:59:46 UTC

there are still some streets in Ukraine with German names and houses, from the time when they had their own parts of cities

2018-08-21 02:00:04 UTC

not sure how true that is in Russia

2018-08-21 02:05:36 UTC

I grew up in the Southern part, near Ukraine. I don't remember having German anything down there. I think they settled along Volga?

2018-08-21 03:12:15 UTC

there, northern Kazakhstan, and Odessa area iirc
