Old hand planes are 100 times better than the "best" one made these days. New ones are cheesy and cheap feeling.

Eastwing makes the best hammers

@Goose All my Craftsman wrenches are 100% steel

2017-12-14 22:35:44 UTC

@RevStench nice thats what i grew up doing in NOLA

2017-12-14 22:39:25 UTC

Bro, I bought them only a few years ago

2017-12-14 22:49:32 UTC

@John O - do you work in utilities?

2017-12-14 22:50:22 UTC

No

2017-12-14 22:50:33 UTC

Commercial electrical

2017-12-14 22:51:33 UTC

Oh ok. I noticed some of the stuff you're around and was curious.

2017-12-14 22:52:56 UTC

Actually I watched some guys lay underground power lines and I was like I wonder if that's the kind of work Johno does.

2017-12-14 22:53:07 UTC

Nope

2017-12-14 23:00:29 UTC

I would like to suggest a tape measure, if you don't already have a preference.
Milwaukee so sweet. I dropped this one 3 stories on to pavement and it didn't screw it up, I had the tape locked about 48in out. One of the magnets broke out but no big deal.

You can read it from both sides and it has an architectural scale on it.

Very nice tape.

2017-12-14 23:13:03 UTC

While I'm at it😂 , anyone use impact guns everyday? I broke my Milwaukee a few months ago so I've been using my hammer/clutch drill for everything. It's to much work haha.
The cheapest tool only Milwaukee I can buy is like $125 on ebay. A brand new DeWalt is $99 everyday at Lowe's with I believe 2 batteries. Anyone use the shit out of one of the 20volt DeWalts? Impact.

2017-12-14 23:16:11 UTC

I do

2017-12-14 23:16:22 UTC

Had it for 5 years, never a problem

2017-12-14 23:16:48 UTC

Actually, I dropped it from 4 stories last year. I encountered a small problem

2017-12-14 23:22:57 UTC

Right on. I dropped a Makita from just above 3 stories it survived, but it didn't have the power my Milwaukee had.

Pretty good battery life? And do the batteries charge pretty quick, like a half hour or so? I appreciate it.

2017-12-14 23:25:05 UTC

Yeah, the 3ah battery lasts for 2 days for me. Our work load is probably different, though. I'd say it would last 3/4 of a day doing carpentry. Batteries charge in an hour

2017-12-14 23:25:18 UTC

Sorry, 4 ah

2017-12-14 23:29:50 UTC

That's still good. I drive a lot of screws but only for a few hours, probably 3ish. I use a lot of nail guns. I got around a day out of mine, depending on how much it was used.
Cool, thanks bro. I think I'm going to diversify my tools haha.

2017-12-14 23:49:22 UTC

Having to deal with 2 different sets of batteries is a pain in the ass

2017-12-14 23:58:50 UTC

@RevStench I use impacts daily. Ingersoll Rand is also a good brand.

2017-12-15 00:00:04 UTC

I don't use that hammer drill often if I don't have to. I still use 2 12volt batteries and 2 18 volt. So the DeWalt is still going to save me money.
@DCViking for driving screws?

2017-12-15 00:01:57 UTC

@RevStench No I use them on nuts & bolts.

2017-12-15 00:04:46 UTC

Word, but I'll keep that in mind when I have to buy a new one of those impacts, but I'm looking for one of the battery operated screw impacts. They should have a different name.haha

2017-12-15 04:18:08 UTC

I use dewalt but my dad uses makita and has been for a couple decades now and they're still going strong.

2017-12-15 16:33:39 UTC

DeWalt
Milwaukee
Porter Cable
Bosch

Are some decent power hand tools. Whether they last kinda depends on what tool it is. I’ve had 6 or 7 dewalt drills/screw guns that have burnt up on me but I like their design so I keep buying em.

Stanley and Johnson make decent levels, tapes, speed squares whatever

2017-12-15 16:35:02 UTC

Ironically enough Skill Saw makes great circular saws. They’re cheap weekend warrior brand but they’ve been doing it so long they make a decent saw. They also make high production commercial saws too

2017-12-15 16:37:26 UTC

@RevStench What kinda Nd of nail guns you use for finish nailing? I really like my Senco pin nailer for trimming stuff. Super lightweight. I used to use porter cable but moved on

2017-12-15 17:05:57 UTC

Bosch is top tier

2017-12-15 17:17:53 UTC

@Deleted User I use semco brad finish gun and a senco and porter cable gun for 16 penny.
Love them both.

2017-12-15 17:19:09 UTC

@John O - I have one of those heated Bosch jackets, it's amazing. The battery lasts about 6 hours of continual use.

2017-12-15 17:19:58 UTC

@Deleted User I use Sawnson speed squares and framing squares.

2017-12-15 17:22:36 UTC

Battery powered circular saws are dangerous in my opinion. They don't have enough power and they kick back a lot. Good way to cut off fingers.
