Polling shows you the demographics of the people in your state. You should align your politics with the biggest population demographic in state. When you see a "positions" vote that is your opportunity to vote towards the politics of your constituents rather than your beliefs.

The ideal target is : very right wing socially and somewhat right wing economically. Look at percentage of population and turnout. THis is also why you can lose to a candidate that has less State influence than you.
