but they also integrated into the system, and returned to their own lands with aspects of roman culture including christianity

This becomes one of the most powerful Imperial regions from the Holy Roman Empire up until the end of wwii

Add in the british, which is mainly anglo-saxon protestant, and you have the guts of the powerful, prosperous, creative people of this world from before the crusades until very recently
