And yeah I would recommend to slowly break it to them, like maybe hint at it at first. Not to lie, but moreso to avoid having to deal with an awkward emotional reaction from them

Yeah I suppose its up to each person to decide how far to take that. I don't really know enough to say what the traditional catholic view would be on it, but from what I've seen while making your life miserable to pronounce the faith to lots of people is admirable, I think a sort of rational balancing of different pressures is wise as well.
You don't need to go martyr yourself somewhere and you don't need to hide your faith completely, so its about finding some sort of virtue in the mean
